Talking points: Pac-5 Division

OCVarsity.com
AM: I heard Troy Thomas used to coach at Crespi. And that he won a CIF title there and everything.

DC: Troy Thomas is the truth. He led the Celts to the 2004 title.

AM: Celts is pronounced with a hard “C,” right?

DC: Sort of like the Celtics, but without Larry Bird and Cedric Maxwell.

AM: No, I think it’s pronounced as if it began with a “K.” That’s what I meant by hard “C.”

DC: I know what you meant.

AM: ANYWAY, Since Crespi beat Mater Dei pretty handily and MD did the same to Servite, I know a lot of people think Crespi will now handle Servite. I don’t see that at all. We’ve seen this before between MD, Servite and Olu, and also with MD, Crespi and Centennial, where each team won one and lost one. More importantly, Crespi ran right through MD similar to the way Centennial did. Servite’s run defense is much better.

DC: Mater Dei’s defense was suspect all year. The Friars did a good job against Esperanza’s running attack last week. I don’t see why that would change this week. The Kelts should try and win this through the air if they can.

AM: They had some success passing last week against MD and have been all right throughout the season. But they really beat MD because of turnovers. With Servite’s playbook, you never know how that will play out.

DC: Crespi scored off of three MD turnovers. Servite turned the ball over three times against Esperanza. The Friars can’t afford to have that happen again.

AM: I think Crespi might be the best team in this division, but because they’re not in our county we don’t pay enough attention.

DC: The Kelts are come in with a seven-game winning streak and have put up some impressive totals along the way. The Friars will have to be ready. I know Thomas will be ready.

AM: Yeah, I found it interesting that when I bumped into Coach Thomas on the field following Servite’s victory against San Clemente, the first thing he asked me was how Crespi had done. He didn’t even seem to care who won the Esperanza-Lakewood game. He wanted to know about Crespi.

DC: He asked me if I knew the MD-Crespi score when I interviewed him following the Esperanza game. I think this is a game that he really wants, and I think he might have a few tricks up his sleeve for his former team.

AM: I’m picking Crespi, even though I never like picking against D.J. Shoemate. He’s like the 2007 Aaron Corp of Orange County.

DC: I can’t pick against Troy Thomas.
