Talking points: Pac-5 Division

OCVarsity.com
AM: Orange Lutheran hasn’t dominated the way I feel like they can.

AM: I think they still have a really big game in them.

SF: Orange Lutheran was fairly dominating against Mater Dei. They did a great job covering the Mater Dei receivers, allowing a pass rush to get after Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley. That was the game that convinced me that Orange Lutheran could win the Pac-5 title again.

AM: What specifically did you see in Olu-MD game that prompted you to have the Lancers winning it all?

AM: A week after watching that same team lose to Servite.

SF: I think Orange Lutheran did not challenge Servite to throw the ball as much as Lutheran should have. Orange Lutheran matched up very well physically with Mater Dei, and quarterback Blake Hyepock had a very smooth game.

AM: Outside of one bad quarter against Servite, Olu’s defense has been terrific all year. This might be the best all-around team remaining in the Pac-5.

SF: I agree. Orange Lutheran’s best unit might be that defensive backfield: very fast, and all good tacklers. You need good tacklers at the corners and at safety, and Lutheran has them. So does Servite. The biggest difference between Lutheran and Servite is that Lutheran has more big-play capability, which you need when you get this deep in the Pac-5 playoffs. Can Lutheran’s offense overcome Long Beach Poly’s team speed on defense? That is the big key for Lutheran on Friday night.

AM: Poly has had quite a season — again — but it’s a little difficult for us to gauge because it hasn’t come against the county’s best.

AM:What do you expect from the Jackrabbits come Friday?

SF: I look for Poly to try to run Lutheran out of the stadium. “Catch us if you can.”

AM: That was a good movie. That DiCaprio fella is gonna be a star. ... I’m with the Lancers on this one. But when the Jackrabbits are allowing less than 10 points a game, it’s hard to feel confident picking against them.

SF: I agree. That’s a tough one. Both Lutheran and Poly are so good. But that’s what you get at this point of the playoffs — excellent teams. Those are the only types of teams that are playing this late in the season.
