This has been a season of shutouts for the Corona del Mar girls soccer team, and that's not entirely a good thing.

Through 12 games, the Sea Kings have posted nine shutouts and allowed only four goals.

Yet the Sea Kings have had their own struggles putting the ball in the net. In five of their nine shutouts, they have not been able to score. They are averaging just over a goal per game.

After they finish their nonleague schedule against Laguna Beach today, the Sea Kings will look to open the Pacific Coast League in winning fashion on Thursday when they travel to University. - Jason Eichelberger

BOYS SOCCER: TOURNAMENT IN THE WORKS

Working in cooperation with Mission Viejo High, El Toro boys soccer Coach Ken Sjobom said the two schools are planning on playing host to a New Year's week tournament next season.

The tournament would begin Dec. 28 and end on the 30th. Sjobom said the tournament will likely feature eight teams, but if there is enough interest, it could include as many as 16. - Damian Dottore

GIRLS WATER POLO: SOUTH COAST SHOWCASE

Capistrano Valley will play host to a trio of South Coast League openers in girls water polo on Thursday night.

Aliso Niguel will play the Cougars first at 5:30 p.m. Mission Viejo takes on Tesoro at 6:45, followed by Dana Hills-San Clemente at 8.

The Division II league has several intriguing players. There is goalie Katie Lind of Aliso Niguel, high-scoring Kim Lewis of Capistrano Valley, Camille Hopp of Mission Viejo, Lauren Colton of Tesoro, Carly Ternasky of No. 6 San Clemente and Colleen McNaught of Dana Hills. ...

Second-ranked Laguna Beach (9-0) plays host to Montebello (6-3) in a match today that pits arguably the top two teams in Division II. The Breakers didn't play in the Holiday Cup last week, but they are on the waiting list to join the tournament, Coach Ethan Damato said. - Dan Albano
