Huntington Beach survives big scare from Fountain Valley

No. 10 Huntington Beach managed to avoid a stunning setback Monday when it rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to defeat Fountain Valley, 54-48, in a nonleague girls basketball game.

Noelani Viloria scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half and finished with five steals for the Oilers (12-3).

In other nonleague games:

Sunny Hills 66, Rancho Alamitos 42: Janice Lee scored 15 points and had four steals as the Lancers (11-4) handed the Vaqueros (11-1) their first loss of the season.

Lee hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Lancers jumped out to 20-9 lead.

Orange Lutheran 57, Chino Hills 51: Krissy Karr and Savannah King each scored 14 points to lead the Lancers (13-0) past the host Huskies.

Orange Lutheran outscored Chino Hills (10-5), 19-9, in the first quarter and never trailed.

Newport Harbor 40, Irvine 32: The Sailors (4-10) bounced back from an early 10-point deficit to beat the host Vaqueros (9-5).

Irvine's Kristan Liddle scored 14 points and had 15 rebounds.

In nonleague girls soccer:

Marina 1, Orange Lutheran 1: Devon Shinn scored late in the second half to help the Vikings (5-3-4) earn a tie with the Lancers (2-8-5) at Orange Lutheran.

The Lancers scored their goal in the first half on a shot by Missy Lazcano.

“We pressured more in the second half,” said Marina coach Rebecca Carr, who was subbing for head coach Mike Greco. “We were a little sluggish in the first half. Our focus was off a little bit.” - CHRIS TOBOLSKI


In nonleague boys soccer:

No. 4 La Habra 2, La Serna 0: Facundo Bruno scored two second-half goals to lead the fourth-ranked Highlanders (9-3-2) over the Lancers at La Habra High.

Jonathan Prieto accounted for assists on both goals, while goalkeepers Lukas Lowery and Bubby Rossman each had one save.
