OCVarsity.com

Sunny Hills' girls water polo team welcomed back one of its top scoring threats last week.

Center Brittany Cornwell returned from post-concussion syndrome and scored four goals in a 10-8 victory against Troy in the Freeway League on Thursday.

The senior suffered a concussion and a cut in the Lancers' scrimmage against Canyon, Sunny Hills coach Keith Nighswonger said in an email.

Cornwell returned about two weeks later and played in six matches but began having headaches.

On Thursday, she showed some of the form that made her Orange County's third-leading scorer last season with 129 goals.

“She returned to her ‘Cornwell ways,'” Nighswonger said. “She is still trying to get her conditioning back, but she does fit nicely into our group.”

Cornwell could be a key player for the Lancers (14-4, 1-0) again this week. Sunny Hills plays Fullerton (11-5, 1-0) on Tuesday and La Habra (11-4, 1-0) on Thursday. …

Self has totaled nine goals, second in the county among all freshmen.

After Thursday's 2-0 league-opening victory over Villa Park, either Self or Wilson had scored a goal in all but one of the team's games.

Their contributions helped the Golden Hawks win eight of their 11 games heading into today's league battle against El Modena….
