Maya's MVPs:
• El Toro running back Jai Morris: He returned a kickoff 59 yards to set up a field goal for the South. He later scored a 15-yard touchdown.
• Los Alamitos linebacker Kameron Jones: He came away with a South fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. He also had two sacks and an interception.
• Honorable mentions: Esperanza linebacker Brady Lukas, Brea Olinda punter Logan Sewell, La Habra quarterback Chris Morales
• Best moment: Morales’s 9-yard touchdown to Canyon’s Christian Daniel with 56 seconds remaining. The play appeared dead when Morales had to scramble to avoid a sack. He moved to his left and threw off the wrong foot when he found Daniel in the back of the end zone. Daniel held on despite getting slammed by a defender immediately after the ball’s arrival.
Morales went 4 of 4 for 104 yards on the drive.
• Play of the game: Troy receiver Josh Swaney comes down with a Morales pass between two defenders and breaks a tackle for a 61-yard gain down the left sideline with less than two minutes in the fourth quarter.
• It was over when: Daniel intercepted a pass at midfield in the final minute.
By the numbers:
• The North had three interceptions
• The South had two interceptions
• Daniel: five catches, 43 yards, 1 touchdown
• Morales: 6 of 10, 143 yards, 1 touchdown
• Not one of six ballcarriers gained more than 10 yards rushing for the North
