Five questions with Edison athlete Preston Spence (6-foot-3, 195), who was a standout at linebacker and running back for the Chargers in 2007 and one of the top hurdlers in the county this spring:
Question: Who is the NFL player you see yourself playing like?
Preston Spence: I might get a little combination of a couple. I might throw a little Deion Sanders in there because I got the nice speed. I got the Brian Urlacher because I’m not afraid to stick my nose in things and get crazy with it. I got a little Barry Sanders in me too because I like to get that finesse.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do, your favorite part of the game?
PS: My biggest rush is right before a game, when you’re walking out, seeing everyone lined up against you, seeing that one guy staring right back in your eyes. It's you against him. That’s all there is. Who’s going to win? Who worked harder? Since I go to Edison, we work hard, so I feel confident.
Q: In your dream situation, where will you be a year from now?
PS: I don’t think about pinpointing a college right now, but I just want to be going somewhere nice. Have myself scheduled out, where I’m going to go and what I’m going to be doing, maybe playing football and running track, or either or. I just want to be settled down.
Q: What are your personal goals this season?
PS: Last year I was the second leading tackler. I want to set the standard high. I want to get around 100 tackles. I had 95 tackles (in 2007).
Q: What is something people don’t know about you?
PS:I sing a lot. My teammates know that. Sometimes I sing to mess around to spirit up the field. Just a little bit of everything. I’ll mix it up. I’ll get a little R&B, some slow stuff, some fast stuff, a little bit of rap. I just do little stuff in practice to break the ice. I was singing “Love” by Nat King Cole today. I was taking them back. I sing Earth, Wind & Fire sometimes.
