Five questions with J.J. Mayer

Five questions with Trabuco Hills' J.J. Mayer.

J.J. Mayer did not play his first year of organized football until his freshman year and immediately wanted to quit.

“The coaches said I had the potential to be good, but I had no idea what the terminology meant so I was just frustrated,” said Mayer, who began that year on the B-team. He changed his mind late in the season following a good performance for the A-team.

Two years later Mayer, a reserve shortstop on the varsity baseball team for two seasons, decided to quit baseball. Why? The 6-2, 200-pound junior, who led the JV team to an undefeated record in 2007, is slated to be the Mustangs’ starting quarterback in 2008.

Question: Who’s the NFL player you see yourself playing like?
J.J. Mayer: I don’t see myself (as him) but I idolize Tom Brady. He’s so intense. He’s a gamer. He works so hard. Everything he does is with 110 percent. It’s really fun to watch him compete out there.

Q: As a quarterback, what is your favorite thing to do, your favorite part of the game?
JM: I like the leadership role, how everyone on the field is looking at you to tell them what to do. You have the answer to everything. When people don’t know something they come to you. I like people coming to me and asking questions. I’m trying to establish the fact that even though I’m a new, upcoming JV guy, I’m trying to be a leader out there.

Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?
JM: Recently, I completed my Eagle Scout project and I’m on my way to being an Eagle Scout. It’s the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. You have to be in boy scouts and be dedicated to it for at least four years. It shows you know how to be a leader, how to plan and execute projects. Something like two percent of the boys in Boy Scouts of America actually attain this goal. I actually joined because I like the uniforms, when I was four years old.

Q: Which is the better uniform: Eagle Scout or Trabuco Hills?
JM: Definitely Trabuco Hills. You don’t get made fun of wearing a Trabuco Hills uniform.
