Two strong teams from strong leagues seemingly would produce a close tennis match. It didn’t happen.

The Woodbridge boys team got off to a hot start en route to a 15-3 victory over Fountain Valley on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs at Woodbridge High.

The Warriors (15-5) move on to play fourth-seed Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates in Saturday's second round. A coin flip today will determine the home team and site.

Woodbridge, the second-place finisher in the Sea View League, got off to a 5-1 lead after the first set of matches and led, 11-1, heading into the third set.

The Barons finished 14-5 overall and were second in the Sunset League.

“I was hoping to have a closer match," Fountain Valley coach Jay Gardner said as he watched his No. 3 doubles team lose to end the match. "A lot of the first-round matches were close. We lost the 5-7's and 4-6's. The chance was there early.”

Woodbridge junior Andre Halabi swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and sophomore Mikey Zablan swept at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. Shuei Ikeda and Joseph Pao-Wu swept at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 7-6 (5), 6-0.

It was a good turnaround for Fountain Valley, which finished fifth in league last year and did not reach the playoffs.

"It was still our year to a certain extent," Gardner said. "We finished second and we're very proud of that."
