No. 1 Mater Dei tripped up by Rosary

Mater Dei took over the top spot in the county softball rankings on Monday, and Rosary promptly handed the Monarchs a 7-5 defeat in the Trinity League opener for both schools on Tuesday at Thornton Park.

Briana Magdaleno went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and four RBIs, Caitrin DeBaun went 3 for 4 with and RBI and Alyssa Gonzales went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI  for the Royals, who pounded out 12 hits against Mater Dei's Brianne Matthews and Carly Wade.

Rosary improved to 9-9 overall and 1-0 in league, while Mater Dei dropped to 11-2-1 and 0-1.

In another Trinity League game:

Orange Lutheran 6, JSerra 0: Georgetown-bound Jenna Stark went 2 for 4 with a double, homer and three RBIs and Occidental-bound Ashley Noone went 2 for 2 with a solo homer to lead the Lancers (9-4, 1-0) past the visiting Lions (2-6, 0-1).

In the Sunset League:

No. 6 Esperanza 6, Edison 5: Maddie Sale drove in two runs to cap a six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth as the Aztecs (9-6-1, 1-0) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat the visiting Chargers (8-3, 0-1). Trea Steele also had a two-run double during Esperanza's rally.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Beckman 3, Irvine 0: Jasmine Watson hit a three-run homer to lift the Patriots (5-3, 1-0) over the visiting Vaqueros (7-5, 0-1).

San Juan Hills 7, University 4: Gianna Iavarone went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the Stallions (4-11, 1-0) knocked off the host Trojans (7-4, 0-1).

In the Empire League:

Pacifica 8, Katella 0: Kyla Javier went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Jamie Prussic and Katrina Oviedo had two hits apiece as the Mariners (5-7, 1-0) defeated the visiting Knights (1-5, 0-1).

In the Orange Coast League:

Estancia 10, Costa Mesa 8: Kendra Fisher went 1 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs and Nicole Marlborough went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lift the Eagles (11-3, 1-0) over the visiting Mustangs (9-9, 0-1).

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 3, L.A. Baptist 1: Natalie Sanchez went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Alexis Beattie went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored to help the Heralds (11-1, 1-0) beat the Knights (6-6, 0-1).

In nonleague games:

No. 4 Tesoro 3-3, Ayala (Chino Hills) 1-0:Kristin Omori pitched the final five innings to nail down the victory for Tesoro in the first game andOregon-bound Samantha Pappas pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts for the shutout in the second game as the Titans (15-0) swept the host Bulldogs (10-5).

Aliso Niguel 4-3, No. 7 Laguna Hills 1-3: Marissa Gilbuena went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, Jess Sewell, Makenzie Morello and Eden Slone all had RBIs and Michigan-bound Mandy Gardner pitched a complete game to lead the Wolverines 9-4-1) past the visiting Hawks (12-4-1) in the opener.

Kylee Lahners went 3 for 4 and scored the tying run on Chelsea Bertoglio's RBI single in the top of the sixth for Laguna Hills before the game was called after eight innings because of darkness. Dionne Anderson went 4 for 4 and scored two runs for Aliso Niguel in the second game.

Valencia (Valencia) 5, No. 5 El Modena 1: Tennessee-bound Madison Shipman went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs as the Vikings (12-3) beat the visiting Vanguards (8-6).

No. 2 Canyon 4, Diamond Bar 0: Tennessee-commit Cheyanne Tarango pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Lauren Young doubled and drove in two runs as the Comanches (10-5) beat the visiting Brahmas (1-7).

Marina 9, El Toro 7: The Vikings (10-2) scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held on to defeat the host Chargers (6-9).

Dana Hills 10, Northwood 0: J.J. Jorgenson went 4 for 5 and drove in three runs and Victoria Brown went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the host Dolphins (10-5) in a victory over the Timberwolves (8-10).

Sunny Hills 3, San Clemente 2: Yolanda Rios went 3 for 4, scored a run and drove in a run and the Lancers (8-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory over the visiting Tritons (3-9).

Fountain Valley 6-2, Villa Park 3-4: Cerissa Rivera doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Barons (5-4) past the Spartans (5-5) in the first game, and Marisa Bast went 2 for 3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for the Spartans, who took the second game.

Santa Ana 5, Western 3: Liz Martinez went 4 for 4 with a double, triple, two runs and an RBI and Victoria Cardenas went 3 for 4 with a run and a stolen base for the Saints (7-5) in a victory over the visiting Pioneers (5-3).

Magnolia 13, Santiago 2: Paridyse Devinney went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for the Sentinels (8-2) in a victory over the visiting Cavaliers (3-6).

La Quinta 1, Oxford Academy 0: Adrianna Cardoza drove in Caity Caraballo with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth and Cardoza and Caraballo combined on a one-hitter to help the Aztecs (6-6) beat the visiting Patriots (8-5).

Connelly 2, Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana) 1: The Koalas (5-6) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally past the host Eagles (10-4).

Chino Hills 10, El Dorado 1: The Huskies (10-6-1) used a 15-hit attack, a three-run third and a seven-run fifth to beat the host Golden Hawks (1-5).
