Savanna’s Kaylee Chevez (98), Valencia’s Gabby Garcia (108) and Western’s Gina Lopez (154) won state titles at Saturday’s girls CIF State wrestling championships at Lemoore High.
This was third girls state championship tournament.
Chevez pulled out a 1-0 victory over Anissa Rodriguez in the finals. Chevez, who finished third last year, won two matches by fall and had a 4-2 overtime victory in the semifinals.
At 108 pounds, Garcia dominated the opposition, winning all five of her matches by fall.
Western’s Gina Lopez pulled off an upset at 154, defeating top seed Courteney Tompkins, 4-1 in the finals.
Loara’s Crystal Zamarripa advanced to the finals at 118, but lost to Northview’s Sabrina Solis 2-1 in the finals. Zamarripa had won four matches by fall before the finals.
The next best finish for a county wrestler belonged to Santa Ana’s Berenice Blanco. Blanco, who won a state title last year, finished third at 126 Saturday.
Aylin Hernandez (154) and Brenda Perez (165) both finished fourth at their respective weights for the Saints, who finished second in the team standings behind Northview of Covina. Loara was third. Western was fifth.
At 103 pounds, Fanny Giron (Anaheim) finished seventh and Magnolia’s Elleni Ortega was eighth.
Beatrice Cortez (Western) secured eighth place at 108 pounds. Her teammate Selena Arredondo was fourth at 237.
Elaine Price (Loara) finished fifth at 132, Sarah Rodriguez (Kennedy) was fourth at 126 and Brenda Casteneda (Godinez) finished seventh at 118.
