Both teams squandered numerous scoring chances in a Group A game on Thursday in the prestigious tournament
In a game where chances were abundant, the No. 4 Mater Dei and No. 9 Mission Viejo girls soccer teams couldn't quite find a way to take advantage.

Monarchs senior goalie Darien Vercillo and Diablos junior goalie Marriah Kessler each stopped five shots as the teams played to a scoreless tie in a Group A game at the Mater Dei Premier Invitational Thursday at Mater Dei High.

“They made some great adjustments at halftime,” Diablos coach Susie Daher said of Mission Viejo.

“For us, it's matter of learning how to adjust to a team that learns how to defend you.”

It was the Diablos (3-1-4) who had scoring chances in the first half, as senior forward Lauren Matheson continually created opportunities with her ball control and precise passing.

The Diablos outshot the Monarchs 3-1, but couldn't find the net.

The second half was controlled by the Monarchs (4-1-4), who used a more aggressive defensive effort to try to keep the ball away from Matheson.

The Monarchs also had the game's best scoring chance midway through the half when freshman Devin Barrett was fouled in the box. Her subsequent penalty kick got past Kessler but hit the right post, keeping the game scoreless.

The Monarchs continued to apply offensive pressure throughout the latter part of the second half, as the passing of seniors Mary-Grace Schmidt and Lindsay Brown set up quality chances in the attacking third of the field.

But senior defenders Becca Massip and Wendy Warner helped the Diablos thwart the Monarchs final scoring opportunities.

“We are working hard at trying to get better in the attacking third,” Monarchs coach Matty West said.

Mater Dei will play Arcadia today, and Mission Viejo will face Marina. Both games are scheduled to start at 5:25 p.m.

Minutes later, the Griffins sent a cross in front of net, where Kiley Godfrey headed in for the 2-0 margin.

San Clemente faces Northwood in group play today while Los Alamitos takes on Canyon.
