MARK YOUR CALENDAR

St. Margaret's vs. Capistrano Valley Christian

Nov. 3 at San Clemente

This one could determine the league champion. St. Margaret's won last season's game, 42-6.

Players to watch
Eric Freese:A returning starter on the offensive line.
Tyler LaPierra:A projected two-way starting lineman.

LAST SEASON: 4th place, 4-6, 1-3

POSTSEASON: 2004, lost to Campbell Hall, 24-7, in first round of Division XIII playoffs

COACH: Bruce Eien (12th year, 51-60-4)

OUTLOOK: The Warriors have some inexperience with only four returning starters on each side of the ball. BC also lost receivers Jeff Jefferson (Villa Park) and Kevin Anderson (Lakewood) to transfers. The Warriors did add transfer WR Matt Coleman from Sunny Hills. BC also should get a boost with four projected seniors starting on the offensive line. The Warriors don't have great size, though FB/NT Jesse Sundstrom is an exception. Another plus for the program should be its work with speed/strength trainer Jim Romero.

HOME STADIUM: Ocean View HS

FACTOID: The Warriors' league victory last season came against Linfield Christian, which is no longer part of the Academy League.

POSTSEASON: 2006, lost to Whittier Christian, 62-20, in first round of Northeast Division playoffs

COACH: Chris Fore (2nd year, 5-6)

OUTLOOK: The Eagles hope to continue their upward flight under Fore. The coach inherited an 0-9 team but collected five victories in 2006, his first season. CVC returns seven starters on offense, led by versatile QB Andre Argaez. Fore calls the senior the best QB he has coached in seven seasons of small-school football. The Eagles also return seven starters on defense, led by Mike Jacobs at linebacker (129 total tackles in 2006). CVC also has added six coaches to its coaching staff for a total of nine.

HOME STADIUM: San Clemente HS

FACTOID: The Eagles were one of two teams in the state to go from winless in 2005 to a playoff participant last season.

LAST SEASON: 2nd place, 6-5, 3-1

POSTSEASON: 2006, lost to Maranatha, 23-8, in first round of the Northeast Division playoffs.

COACH: Pete Anderson (1st year)

OUTLOOK: Anderson, an on-campus math teacher, inherits a four-year starter at QB in Jamie McGee. The Lightning also will be looking for offensive production from fullback Max Torres and a deep group of receivers. Cody Gates anchors the offensive line. Torres also anchors a 4-4 gap-control defense. Sage opens the season with five consecutive home games, so it could start fast.

LAST SEASON: 1st place, 14-0, 4-0

POSTSEASON: Won CIF Northeast Division title

COACH: Harry Welch (1st year)

OUTLOOK: The Tartans return just a few starters on defense but have some familiar stars on offense. RB Hunter Steffien is back after rushing for 1,136 yards last season. QB Cameron Hiller returns after tossing 22 TDs in 2006. The offense likely will feature four juniors on the line. Welch will employ his spread offense that racked up the points at Canyon of Canyon Country. St. Margaret's averaged 34.5 points last season. Welch's Canyon team averaged 44.1 points in 2006.

POSTSEASON: 2006, lost to Salesian, 26-19, in first round of Northeast Division playoffs

COACH: Bobby Mendoza (3rd year, 13-8)

OUTLOOK: The Huskies are athletic at the skill positions with players such as WR Richard Johnson and QB Aryan Meknat. They also have some impressive size along the lines, led by Anthony Cobian. The 6-foot-3, 320-pound senior could be one of the county's better offensive lineman. If the Huskies stay healthy, they could contend for a league title.

LAST SEASON: 4th place, San Joaquin West, 0-9, 0-3

POSTSEASON: 2005, lost to South Bay Lutheran, 64-22, in first round of 8-man playoffs

COACH: Deverick Lampley (1st year)

OUTLOOK: The Minutemen are looking to improve their offense and have scrapped the wing-T for the pistol offense, which is employed by Nevada. Last season in their transition from the 8-man ranks, the Minutemen averaged 13.5 points. Lampley wants to double that average. Doney is a first-year starter at quarterback and could be busy. Lampley wants to pass 70 percent of the time. The defense also needs improvement. Liberty Christian allowed more than 37 points a game in 2006. Lampley likes his group of linebackers, led by Isaiah Jeynes.

HOME STADIUM: Ocean View HS

LAST SEASON: Tied for 1st place (San Joaquin-West) 8-4, 2-1

POSTSEASON: 2006, lost to Whittier Christian, 40-13, in quarterfinals of the Northeast Division playoffs

COACH: Gary Chambers (1st >year)

OUTLOOK: Chambers replaces Mike Henjum as the Warriors' coach. Last season, Chambers served as the team's offensive coordinator. He has spent three seasons as an assistant, so the transition should be smooth. Chambers' son, Brendan, was All-CIF selection last season. With a strong group of WRs, Brendan could improve on his 24 TD passes from 2006. SVC returns seven starters on offense and eight on defense. Play along the lines, however, will be critical. Projected starters Clayton Viter (Dana Hills) and William Hinn (JSerra) are transfers. If the lines play well, the Warriors should contend in the San Joaquin League.

HOME STADIUM: JSerra

FACTOID: Brendan Chambers passed for more than 2,000 yards in 2006 and rushed for more than 1,000.

LAST SEASON: Tied for 1st (Alpha League) 10-3, 4-1

POSTSEASON: 2006, lost to St, Margaret's, 35-21, in Northeast Division semifinals

COACH: Jon Caffrey (5th year, 30-17)

OUTLOOK: Bright. The Heralds lost star RB Esteban Camarillo to graduation, but they return eight starters on each side of the ball. Last season's team reached the Northeast Division semifinals but Caffrey says this is his best group. In life-after-Esteban, look for the Heralds to pass the ball more and be more balanced on offense. Aleks Schwerdt is a burner at WR. Another positive sign for the Heralds is roster size. Caffrey has about 90 players in the program, including 27 incoming freshmen.

HOME STADIUM: Whittier College

OUTLOOK: The Pioneers return five starters on offense, led by first-team all-league RB Stephen Dudro. The senior surpassed the 1,000-yard barrier last season. St. Michael's also returns all three of its linemen from an offense than averaged almost 39 points last season. The Pioneers return three starters from a defense that allowed an average of 44.8 points. Meschuk said the team lifted weights hard in the offense.
