Fountain Valley football coach John Shipp, who guided the Barons the past nine seasons, has resigned, he confirmed Tuesday.

"I need to re-assess where my future is at in coaching," said Shipp, who remains a physical education teacher at the Sunset League school.

Shipp replaced Eric Johnson before the 2004 season and went 45-48-1 in nine seasons.

The Barons made the playoff three times under Shipp and were part of the Sunset League's memorable five-way tie for first place in 2008.

Fountain Valley finished 4-6 overall this season, including a 1-4 record in the Sunset League.

Shipp coached the South to a victory in the Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game in 2010.
