Fryer's Week 6 football notes

Mater Dei-Servite sold out for certain Monday (a few tickets came loose and were released for sale at Mater Dei on Monday) for Friday's game at Cal State Fullerton. There were three listings for Mater Dei-Servite tickets on craigslist.com Monday. How often do you see that for a high school game? Tickets were distributed almost 50-50 to Mater Dei and Servite, with both getting roughly 5,000 apiece. There should have been a cap on maximum tickets purchased per person, because many people who want to attend could not access tickets. Tickets were bought by the dozens at one purchase by people who won't use all of them.

Servite athletic director Alan Clinton said Servite, the home team, is contractually obligated to pay $12,000 to Cal State Fullerton for rental of Titan Stadium. If the game was moved to Angel Stadium, Servite would still pay CSF that $12,000 plus the fee for Angel Stadium. Also, Clinton said, Servite sold its allotment of tickets before the Angels were eliminated from the playoffs, so a move to Angel Stadium would make Servite collect the reserved tickets sold and then would not be able to sell new tickets until today when the Angel Stadium ticket office reopens after being closed for a week after the Angels were eliminated. Unsold tickets would have to be returned to Angel Stadium on Thursday for game-night sales.

Of course, it has to be Mater Dei-Servite. And many think this could be Servite's year, given that Edison defeated Mater Dei and Servite defeated Edison. The Friars have not beaten Mater Dei since 1988. Mater Dei and Servite are 3-2 teams, but both teams' two losses are to teams in the state top 25.

Two other good ones, both league openers, are on Friday's schedule. Mission Viejo is at Tesoro, seeking revenge for last year's Tesoro victory over Mission, Mission's first South Coast loss since 1999. Newport Harbor plays Edison in a Sunset League game at Orange Coast College. Both are 4-1, with losses to fine teams: Edison lost to Servite; Newport Harbor lost to Long Beach Poly, the top-ranked team in California.

The Empire League. Katella is the only darkhorse among the six teams. The other five - Cypress, Loara, Kennedy, Pacifica, and Valencia - are all good enough to win the league championship.
