Surge puts Edison in playoff position
High school water polo.
Edison's boys water polo team scored five consecutive goals in the fourth period Wednesday night to rally past Fountain Valley, 9-8, to finish fourth in the Sunset League and become eligible for an at-large Division 1 playoff berth.
Troy Oates scored all three of his goals in the fourth at Newport Harbor to help lead the Chargers (14-14, 2-3).
Edison took a 9-7 lead thanks to its five-goal outburst. Fountain Valley (10-17, 1-4) scored with about 40 seconds left and had a chance to force overtime but junior Nick Halloran blocked a perimeter shot with about five seconds remaining to help seal the victory for Edison.
Justin Harrison and Alec Niederland each added three goals apiece for Edison.
In another league game, Los Alamitos defeated Huntington Beach, 9-7, to secure second place behind Newport Harbor.
Mater Dei, Servite to play
Mater Dei and Servite will renew their rivalry in the Trinity League on Thursday with a match at Servite, Servite president Pete Bowen said in an e-mail.
Last season, Servite said it canceled its league match against Mater Dei because of injuries suffered by one of its players in a match against the Monarchs' JV team earlier in the season.
