Crespi's Thomas likely Friars coach

:

Servite is expected to hire Crespi of Encino's Troy Thomas as its football coach today.

Servite has called a 2:30 p.m. news conference today at the school. Servite athletic director Rob Ickes declined to comment on Thomas' hiring Monday.

Thomas, the Los Angeles Daily News Coach of the Year in 2004, guided Crespi to the CIF-SS Division X title last season with a 32-14 victory against North Torrance. Servite and Crespi are both all-boys Catholic schools.

Thomas has coached Crespi the past four seasons, going 34-13. He also has been an assistant coach at Crespi, his alma mater, and at Westlake. He was also an assistant at the University of Hawaii and Fresno State.

On Feb. 22, Servite announced the hiring of Los Alamitos coach John Barnes as its head coach. But just a few hours later, Barnes relinquished the job.

One of the coaches Servite contacted after Barnes' returned to Los Alamitos was Corona Centennial's Matt Logan, the coach confirmed Monday. Logan, who interviewed for the position, said Servite asked him if he was interested in the post. "My heart is at Centennial," Logan said he told Servite.

Logan is a former Mater Dei and Esperanza assistant.

Clovis West coach Jim Hartigan, formerly at Santa Margarita, said he had informal talks about the Servite opening through his friends connected with the program.

Century hires gomez

Jesse Gomez is the new football coach at Century. He replaces Kevin Pola, who resigned after two seasons.

Gomez coached at Santa Ana the past six seasons, and compiled a 25-37 record there. Santa Ana was 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the Golden West League in 2004.

The Saints qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs, in which they were eliminated by Arroyo of El Monte in the first round.

Century was 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Orange League in '04.

The Centurions qualified for the Division IX playoffs, in which they were eliminated by eventual division champion Tesoro in the first round.
