Sage Hill's season comes to end in state regionals
High school volleyball.
SAN DIEGO – Sage Hill's deepest run in the CIF state girls volleyball playoffs ended Saturday when the Lightning was unable to handle defending state champion La Jolla Country Day, 25-16, 24-26, 25-15, 25-16, in a Division IV match at La Jolla Country Day.
The Lightning (27-6) struggled with the Torreys' serving and had trouble containing middle blocker Kendall Peterkin, a Princeton recruit, who finished with a game-high 12 kills and eight blocks.
"Their serving was the best we've seen this year," Sage Hill coach Dan Thomassen said. "We did what we could to prepare for it, but without great passing there isn't much you can do."
The Torreys (32-8), the CIF San Diego Section Division IV champs, went on long scoring runs. Most were courtesy of Peterkin and Maya Hood's serving.
Hood reeled off six consecutive points in the first set to break it open from 11-9 to 17-9.
Peterkin added five in a row later to essentially put the match away.
The lone bright spot came in the second set when Sage Hill's Maggie Danner turned a 16-24 deficit into a 26-24 victory with her serving. She had two aces and two kills during the run.
Danner finished with eight kills and three aces. Senior Zoe Krietenberg ended her career with a team-high 11 kills, with freshman Maddy Abbott and senior Natasha Sakraney chipping in five apiece.
