Santa Ana holds on

Special to OCVarsity.com

SANTA ANA A pair of first-quarter Segerstrom turnovers led to 10 Santa Ana points and that was the difference in a 34-25 Saints victory Friday in a Golden West League battle at Segerstrom High.

Ramiro Velasco’s fumble recovery two plays into the game set up the first of Luis Diaz’s two field goals for Santa Ana (5-4, 3-1 in league).

After Francisco Partida’s 66-yard run put the Jaguars (4-5, 1-3) up 7-3, Frank Chavez recovered a Segerstrom fumble and took it 56 yards to the end zone to retake the lead at 10-7.

There were four second-quarter lead changes within a 3:17 span, and despite a pair of scoring runs from Akeem Christian, who rushed for 237 yards, Segerstrom was still down, 24-19, at the break.

Diaz’s 33-yard field goal were the only points of the third quarter.
