Villa Park boys basketball coach Kevin Reynolds has two days off this week.
The CIF-Southern Section wants him to take a longer vacation.
The disparity might be unprecedented, between what the CIF-Southern Section recommended and what Villa Park High did last week in the matter of disciplining Reynolds.
The Southern Section is the governing body of interscholastic high school athletics in Orange County and much of Southern California, but its powers are limited. It cannot hire or fire coaches or other athletic personnel, nor can it levy discipline on coaches or athletes.
In the case of undue influence allegations against Reynolds, the section could only recommend that Villa Park follow its suggested discipline based on the section's findings. It found that Reynolds did violate the undue influence rule and recommended a 10-game suspension - that was the consensus decision at the section office, although there might have been some section officials who sought a harsher penalty.
The school decided a two-day suspension fit. Reynolds will not be involved with the Spartans boys basketball team on Thursday and Friday as it plays in a tournament in San Luis Obispo.
Key testimony in the section's investigation was comments from the mother of an Esperanza basketball player who alleged that Reynolds met privately with her about a potential transfer of the player from Esperanza to Villa Park. Such contact violates Rule 510 - "Undue influence, pre-enrollment contact and failure to disclose pre-enrollment contact." Rule 510 is sometimes referred to the as the recruiting rule. The nature of the discussion is in dispute; if the meeting did occur and Reynolds said something like "Nice to meet you, but any conversation has to be with our school administration" then no violation took place.
The section concluded that the conversation occurred and was substantial.
Another part of the matter is an extended-stay motel. At least two Villa Park players used the motel to establish residency in the Villa Park attendance area so they could be athletically eligible. Nothing wrong there, unless Reynolds, other school personnel or persons associated with the school or the basketball program directed them to the motel.
The CIF-SS office is considering sanctions against Villa Park. Sanctions could range from exclusion from CIF-SS boys basketball playoffs to suspension of membership in the CIF-SS.
As CIF-SS spokesman Thom Simmons said via e-mail Tuesday, "We are still exploring our options."
Legal entanglements, in place or in position to be put into place, are involved. Thus, other Century League basketball coaches, who brought the issue to the attention of the Orange Unified School District and the CIF-SS office, cannot comment and section officials must keep mum for the time being, too.
Emphasis on "for the time being." This issue is not closed.
Taking a look around Orange County high school sports:
• Jordan Sachs of La Habra, one of the county's better all-around scorers last year, opened his senior year Monday by scoring 47 points in the Highlanders' 71-65 victory over Foothill in the PORAC Coyote Classic at Buena Park High.
• Mater Dei's boys basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the state and the nation, started its season with a 103-45 victory over Loara in the Taco Company Tournament at Loara High (Loara coach Ed Prange always graciously schedules his team to open against Mater Dei in the tournament that Prange and Loara host). Six Monarchs scored in double figures, led by David Wear's 19 points.
• Mater Dei's girls basketball team is No. 4 and Brea Olinda is No. 5 in calhisports.com's California preseason rankings. Foothill, led by 2007-08 all-county first-team selection Christina Marinacci, is No. 11.
• All-league teams for fall sports are arriving in our office - but we need more so you parents, coaches and athletic directors can help make our publication of these teams, on or around Christmas Day, complete. Coaches, please e-mail them to preps@ocregister.com or fax them to 714-796-6765. Also, the National Football Foundation's Orange County Chapter is now identifying honorees for its scholar-athlete banquet, which fetes football players who were all-league or all-conference while maintaining a grade-point average of 3.3 or higher. Information on honorees goes to Dick Whitney at 714-960-2759.
• Crean Lutheran in Irvine does not have a senior class yet, but the school already is making an impact in athletics. Alexandra Sciarra, a Crean Lutheran junior, had the fastest time of any county runner in the Division V race at the state cross country championships to finish ninth overall at 19:42.
• The Tesoro-Orange Lutheran football game, a Pac-5 Division semifinal, will be televised live by FSN Prime Ticket on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game is at Santa Ana Stadium. Parking there is $5.
• The CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships are Saturday at the UC Irvine Bren Events Center. The schedule: Division V, 10 a.m.; Division IV, noon; Division III, 2 p.m.; Division II, 5 p.m.; and Division I, 7 p.m. Separate admission - $14 for adults and $8 for children, senior citizens and students with student ID - is required for the first session (divisions V, IV and II) and second session (divisions II and I), and parking is $7.
