IRVINE Huntington Beach had a little trouble with Northwood’s change-up offense all night, but the Oilers got a stop when they needed it and held on for a 22-15 Sea View League victory Thursday at Irvine High.
Northwood (0-7, 0-2) switched quarterbacks throughout the game for the first time this season, using Andrew Stephensonto run and A.J. Gubernickto pass.
It nearly worked.
Down by seven points in the closing minutes, Northwood moved the ball to the Huntington Beach 25-yard line, but the drive stalled there. Gubernick threw incomplete on fourth down after being pressured by Oiler defensive end Keith Roberts.
The score was tied, 7-7, at halftime, but Huntington Beach (4-3, 1-1) scored on its first possession of the third quarter to take the lead for good. Johnny Olivescored on runs of 1 and 2 yards for the Oilers in the second half.
The Oilers rushed for 220 yards.
