•Esperanza advanced to the Division II-AA quarterfinals before losing to Etiwanda, 41-31. Edison (second round) and Marina (first round) also qualified for the playoffs last season. ...

•The Sunset League is grouped in Division II-AA with the Citrus Belt, Rio Hondo, Miramonte, Mission, Ocean, Mountain View, Baseline and Tri-Valley Leagues for the playoffs this season. ...

•Esperanza coach Matt Roberts said Allison Burns, who averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game as a sophomore before missiing her junior year because of a torn ACL, is healthy and stronger than ever. Burns signed with Vanguard University. ...

•Esperanza's Lauren Spinazze averaged 8.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and made all-league last season. ...

•The Aztecs also have their best defender, Carrie Attaway, back. Attaway averaged 7.3 points per game last season. ...

•"I think this year's team has the ability to be very solid," Edison coach Corey Kelly said. "They all work extremely hard and look to improve every day. They are great student/athletes with a lot of character, who love to play together. With the solid foundation of returners, and the exciting newcomers, I think this should be a fun, productive year."
