Kickoff 2012: Edison preview
Last season record: 8-3, 5-0 in Sunset (5-0)
Postseason: 2011, lost to Tesoro, 16-14, in Pac-5 Division first round
Coach: Dave White (27th season, 189-103-3)
Home stadium: Huntington Beach/Orange Coast College
Outlook: Bright. The Chargers don’t have a big-name, returning standout but are loaded with size, seniors and momentum. Edison appears to have one of Orange County’s biggest offensive lines. Led by returning starters Jeremiah Frost (358 pounds) and Tico Fuga (278), the Chargers’ line averages about 296 pounds. The ground attack could be the beneficiary with two returning starters in Elijah Herrera and Marquis Ross – both of whom have good speed. Last season, Ross was slowed by a hamstring injury. Edison also has a capable passer in Alek Torgersen, who is being recruited by Ivy League schools. The Chargers pride themselves on playing seniors, so their defense could be a prideful group. Edison projects that nine of the 11 starters will be seniors. The Chargers gained momentum in July by capturing their passing tournament and the Santa Margarita linemen competition the same day. “We don’t have any stat guys (back from last season),” Edison coach Dave White said, “but I think we’ll be pretty good. … I know we’re big and strong.” Outside linebacker Alejandro Perez is a transfer from Garden Grove who arrived at Edison during the 2011 season.
Factoid: White is three victories shy of 200 for his career. His youngest son, Garrett, is playing on the Chargers’ freshmen team. White’s oldest son, Matt, in an assistant football coach at Bradshaw Christian in Sacramento. Bradshaw finished 11-1 last season and won a division title.
School record: 38-157-11
