Segerstrom prevails in overtime (updated)
SANTA ANA - In a high-scoring overtime thriller, Segerstrom came away with a 41-35 victory over Mayfair of Lakewood on quarterback Brian Murrietta’s 3-yard touchdown run.
Murrieta had a 56-yard touchdown run on the fifth play of the game, to go along with 89 yards passing. He rushed 10 times for 109 yards.
Running back Matt Navarro rushed for 108 yards and four touchdowns (17, 1, 5, and 4 yards).
Navarro had two crucial touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 35-35.
Navarro scored his last touchdown after a pass interference call, and that sent the game into overtime.
“We have 33 seniors, and at halftime we said it was up to them. They were going to lead us and they did it,” Jaguars coach Mike Maceranka said.
“They came back, and our senior leadership was key tonight.”
In overtime, Mayfair had a four-and-out and the Jaguars relied on their running attack to push the ball downfield.
“It (the win) is huge," Maceranka said. "This year our theme was the next step, we wanted to win our league and last year we made the playoffs but we lost so we wanted to get to the next step, which was to get to the next round. This is huge for our school.”
