Edison goal keeper Kevin Piscapo makes a diving catch as JSerra's Alex Duarte braces for impact early in Wednesday's CIF-SS second round playoff game at Edison in Huntington Beach. Also involved in the play are Ian Ewart, left, and James Papbst, far right.

JSerra teams up for victory over Edison

Davor Fabulich has been JSerra's boys soccer coach for six seasons. Along the way he has won CIF-SS and Trinity League championships and helped produce an NSCAA All-American and State Player of the Year.

This year’s roster can’t match those accomplishments right now, yet Fabulich just might be having more fun coaching this season.

“This team is my favorite,” he said. "They stick together and play like a team. There is not one individual. It is everybody coming together at the right time.”

What happened in the 34th minute of its game Wednesday against Edison is a good example of that. Jonathan Fabulich leads the team in goals, but instead of taking the shot himself, he delivered a cross to Ether Bustos at the far post. With one touch, Bustos scored to give JSerra a 1-0 victory against the host Chargers in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

This is the third time in four seasons the Lions have made it to the quarterfinals. They will be at home against Palos Verdes on Friday.

“We have got to keep putting in the work now, and playing our game. We have to take it one game at a time,” Bustos said. “They (Edison) were organized and came out and gave us a good game. It was tough (to get scoring chances).”

Kevin Piscopo was responsible for that. The Chargers’ senior goal keeper finished with six saves, and none was routine.

Right before Bustos scored, Piscapo leaped high to make a diving save on a 30-yard free kick that was curling toward the far post.

In the 55th minute, Piscapo jumped over a crowd of players in front of the goal to slap away a JSerra corner kick as it hooked toward the goal.

Those seemed easy compared to the stop Piscapo made in the 70th minute when he slid in front of Alex Duarte’s shot from 10-yards out and knocked it away with his cleats

“He came up with some good saves. There was one or two at the end that really kept us in it,” Edison coach Charlie Breneman said. “We may not have been the most skilled team in the world, but we outworked teams

"The kids worked hard tonight and pushed them (JSerra) to the limit. They just weren’t able to get that goal.”

The Chargers didn’t have many opportunities to score. Perhaps the best chance came when the Lions made a sloppy clearance and the ball went to Edison sophomore Devin Anderson. Anderson’s shot, though, was just wide of the near post.

In the second half, Ty O’Connor took two free kicks for the Chargers. Both, however, were just slightly off target.

The Lions were missing Michael Cronk, their 6-foot-5 center back who was out with a concussion. Fabulich said he expects him to be cleared to play in time for the quarterfinals.

Also in Division 1:

San Clemente 2, Harvard-Westlake 1: Santiago Digiuseppe scored the winner with 15 minutes left to lead the visiting Tritons (27-2-1) into the quarterfinal round. Blayne Martinez also scored for the Tritons, who outshot Harvard-Westlake, 20-8.

Gage Zerboni got the assist on both goals, giving him 20 assists for the season. San Clemente will be home for Friday's game against Santa Barbara.

"We just couldn't seem to put it away," San Clemente coach Mike Pronier said. "We know we can play better."

In Division 5:

Godinez 3, Righetti 2: Andrew Soriano scored two goals and Eric Torres added another for the visiting Grizzlies (14-2-4).

Saddleback 1, Los Amigos 1 (Saddleback advances on penalty kicks, 3-1): Mario Guerrero finished with a goal for the host Roadrunners (14-4-4). Cristofer Echeverria scored for the Lobos (14-4-1).
