Sunny Hills pulls out victory over Aliso Niguel

The Sunny Hills-Aliso Niguel trilogy in girls water polo lived up to its lofty standards Thursday night.

Cecilya Lundy scored a power-play goal with 1:51 left in the first three-minute overtime period to lift the Lancers over Aliso Niguel, 8-7, in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round playoff match at Fullerton College.

Lundy's cross-cage shot from the perimeter was the only goal of overtime and pushed Sunny Hills to 3-0 against Aliso Niguel.

The Lancers' previous decisions in the series were, 11-9, and, 11-8, in early December.

"We knew it was going to be tough," said Lundy, who scored a match-high six goals.

The victory moves Sunny Hills (24-6) into Saturday's quarterfinal against fourth-seeded La Serna, which defeated the Lancers, 13-9, in mid-December.

Sunny Hills led, 7-4, with just more than four minutes left in the fourth, but the Wolverines (16-11) and their counterattack forced overtime. Sydney Smith capped a counter with a lob shot to tie the score, 7-7, with 1:13 left.

"If we had one more minute (in the fourth)," Aliso Niguel coach Erick Lynch said, "I think we win."

Sunny Hills' defense was sparked in the second half by 2-meter guard Alexandrea Paxton, who had three field blocks. Two of Paxton's blocks came against Aliso Niguel's power-play, which finished 1 for 4.

Danielle Christensen also blocked a power-play shot by Aliso Niguel in the second half.

Kerstin Laye added two goals for Sunny Hills while goalie Kathy Hernandez made 12 saves.
