Servite upsets No. 4 Mater Dei

Score one for the Friars … and a big one at that.
Servite (16-9, 6-2) upset fourth-ranked Mater Dei, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 Thursday night to move into a tie for second place in the Trinity League with the Monarchs (21-3, 6-2).
Mater Dei swept Servite in the first meeting of the regular season, April 7.
Madison Hayden had 22 kills and 10 digs for the Friars. Ryan Windisch had 25 digs. Kevin Kustura had four kills, one block, 45 assists and 11 digs.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Servite and Mater Dei are now in a race for second place in the Trinity League. The third-place team will likely begin the CIF-SS playoffs on the road against a league champion.
Servite, the only Trinity League team to win a game against the Eagles, visits Santa Margarita Tuesday and concludes the regular season against Orange Lutheran Thursday.
Mater Dei hosts JSerra Tuesday and plays at Santa Margarita Thursday.
Also in the Trinity League
No. 1 Santa Margarita 3, St. John Bosco 0: Ryan Baine and Spencer Buckley connected on 12 kills apiece to lead the Eagles (27-2, 8-0) to the 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 road victory.
Taylor Hammond had 31 assists and four aces.
In the Sunset League
No. 9 Huntington Beach 3, No. 10 Fountain Valley 1: Behind a pair of 16-kill performances from Kyle Baily and Andrew Tenbrink, the Oilers (13-12, 5-3) knocked off the Barons, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-11 in a Sunset League match.
Tenbrink and Baily recorded six and four blocks, respectively. Matt Butler tallied 54 assists and 10 digs.
Fountain Valley falls to 4-4 in the Sunset League.
The victory puts Huntington Beach in a position to possibly finish the week tied for second place in the Sunset League. Edison, who is currently 5-2 in the league, faces second-ranked Newport Harbor Friday night.
In the Century League
No. 5 Esperanza 3, Brea Olinda 0: The Aztecs (21-4, 11-0) cruised to another three-game sweep, 25-14, 25-12, 25-8 as they defeated the visiting Wildcats.
Jake Arnitz led Esperanza with eight kills. Jacob Johnson and John Oxnard had five apiece. Taylor Christoffers had 20 assists. Esperanza, who is ranked 10th in the latest CIF-SS Division 1 poll, clinched the Century League title Tuesday.
