Anaheim slips past Savanna with late FG
Savanna vs. Anaheim. Game played at Glover Stadium.
ANAHEIM - Anaheim was outgained nearly 2-1 by Savanna on Friday night, but used an 84-yard interception return for a score and a 38-yard field goal with three seconds left to take a 17-14 Orange League-opening victory at Glover Stadium.
Savanna (2-4, 0-1) used touchdowns by quarterback Vito Zaccaria (one running, one passing) to take a 14-7 lead at halftime.
The Colonists (4-2, 1-0) got even late in the third as Luis Amaya picked off a Savanna pass and returned it 84 yards to tie the score at 14
Anaheim had a chance to break the deadlock early in the fourth but a 34-yard field goal try by Jesse Aguilar was off the mark.
Anaheim was denied twice on fourth down in the final 12 minutes as well.
Following an Izzy Reyes 30-yard punt return to the Savanna 31, Aguilar was presented a chance at redemption … which Anaheim coach Lanny Booher said he had no doubt he would cash in on.
"He had a good week of practice," Booher said. "After that miss, I told him to go back to the (kicking) net and said he would win the game for us."
Savanna's DaShawn Miller led all rushers with 105 yards on 19 carries.
