Three weeks into the boys golf season, Mater Dei coach Ollie Martin finally is starting to see the Monarchs play up to their potential.

All eight of his players who teed off Wednesday at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana posted scores in the 70s. But to compete with the best in the CIF-Southern Section, the No. 5 Monarchs are going to have to shave off some strokes as Long Beach Wilson posted a 354-365 nonleague victory against Mater Dei.

Wilson freshman Andrew Fernandes earned medalist honors, carding a 3-under-par 68.

“The progress is good. We were playing what we knew was a really good team. We are competing well,” Martin said. “But we need to keep working on some things that will eliminate some strokes here and there.”

Course management and wedge control are two areas that Martin said could use some work right now, so the Monarchs can increase their proximity to the pin.

Some of the Monarchs, though, already are knocking it close as freshman Koichiro Sato dropped his approach on the 399-yard par-4 18th about 10 feet below the hole.

Sato and freshman teammate Isaiah Aguirre finished with a 3-over 74. Aguirre finished second at the Diamondback Tournament on Monday, shooting an even-par 72 at Spring Valley Lake Golf Club in Victorville.

Marcus De La Rosa and Edward Deeb led the Monarchs with a 1-over 72. Entering this match, De La Rosa, whose cousin is PGA Tour pro Hunter Mahan, was leading the team in scoring with a 36.8 average in nine-hole matches.

“The competitive spirit is there. Handling the pressure of a big match is there,” Martin said. “I hate to lose any match, but this was a good thing that we can build off of.”

Long Beach Wilson had seven of its players break 80 with three of them posting a score at or below par.
