Spencer Lupin scored a power-play goal on assist from Stephen Riggins with about 1:45 left to lift Santa Margarita's No. 10 boys water polo team past visiting Tesoro, 8-7, in a season-opening match for both teams.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Melosini then sealed the victory by making two of his 18 saves in the final 1:18.

Lupin, a sophomore center, and Riley Smith each scored three goals for the Eagles.

Taylor Peterson scored three goals for Tesoro. The Titans, ranked fifth in Division 3, took a 7-6 lead into the fourth period.

Division 1 member Santa Margarita gets another test Wednesday when it plays host to Murrieta Valley at 4 p.m.
