Santa Margarita can't keep up with Alemany
MISSION HILLS — Alemany showed why it is the No. 1 seed in the playoffs for CIF-SS Division 3A on Friday night, ending Santa Margarita’s run through the postseason, 78-67, at Bishop Alemany High.
The Eagles' loss ends up being their final game with longtime coach Jerry DeBusk, who is retiring at the end of this season.
The Eagles (17-14) had difficulty dealing with the Warriors' athleticism and quickness from the start of the game. They fell behind 22-11 after the first quarter.
But DeBusk credited his team for hanging in the game and closing the gap to 41-32 at halftime.
“Our effort was darn good,” DeBusk said. “To be only down nine was testament to that. We hung together. That team is very talented and highly skilled.”
That effort wasn’t enough, however, as Alemany used a 6-0 run to close the third quarter, making its lead 14 points going into the final quarter.
Wolfie Wood led the Eagles with 16 points, to go along with six rebounds and seven assists.
Ryan Merritt added 11 points, Connor Pope contributed nine points and five assists, and Joe Furstinger finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
