OCVarsity previews football teams for the 2008-09 season.

Saddleback Valley Christian

Last season: 12-1, 7-0 (1st in San Joaquin League)

Postseason: 2007, lost to Brentwood, 35-7, in Northeast Division semifinals

Coach: Gary Chambers (2nd year, 12-1)

Outlook: With the graduation of Chambers' son, Brendan, and receiver Chris Gipe, the Warriors might be hard pressed to match their offensive output from '07. Behind Brendan's 2,752 yards and 32 TDs passing, SVC averaged almost 41 points. The Warriors return seven starters on offense, so the unit figures to remain solid. Eric Speik, a running back last season, replaces Brendan at quarterback. SVC will use a few players at running back, including the bruising Devon Edwards. The speedy Josh Squirrel is threat at receiver. Gary Chambers said SVC could be better defensively than last season. The Warriors return eight starters from a unit that allowed just under 13 points a game. SVC could be the team to beat in the San Joaquin and a top contender in the Northeast Division.
