Spring Insider: Esperanza offense
Esperanza’s run, run and run some more offense is taking on a different tone. This year, it’ll be more like: run, run, pass and run some more.
Coach Bill Pendleton: “We’re going to throw it more than we did last year, which is not saying a whole lot. We won 10 games and we threw two touchdowns. I’ll take that ratio any day.
“We’re still going to be 70-30 run.”
Last year? “80-20.”
Why the change? The Aztecs have a new quarterback. Senior Sean McDonald, last year’s QB, is going to play more running back and safety, while taking a limited number of direct snaps a game. Junior Drew Huusfeldt, last year’s JV signal caller, is going to spend more time under center.
Pendleton: “He throws a little better, doesn’t run quite as well. He’ll be more of a quarterback. McDonald will be more of a running back.”
McDonald on the position change: “It’s all right with me, as long as we keep winning. Last year was really my first year playing QB.”
Jared Moore, who split carries last season, is going to be the primary running back, with the team’s quarterback and “sweeper” combining for about 30-35 percent of the carries.
Pendleton: “We always adjust to what (personnel) we’ve got. We can’t be set in stone.”
Half the offensive line is back, and it’s bringing more beef.
Lineman Geoff Hyde: “I think it’s the biggest offensive line we’ve had in a while.”
They average about 240 across the line, up from 225-230.
