Tesoro captured five of the six second-round sets to pull away from and defeat Capistrano Valley, 11-7, in South Coast League girls tennis action Tuesday at Tesoro High.

The No. 10 Titans (6-3, 2-1) received a boost from No. 3 singles player Kathlyn Kordestani and a sweep from top player Mayci Jones. Kordestani upset the Cougars No. 2 singles player, Ashley Ta, 7-6, to finish off Round 2 and give Tesoro an 8-4 advantage.

The teams were tied after the opening round, 3-3, with the Cougars (3-3, 1-2) taking two singles sets at No. 2 and 3. Capo Valley also won two singles sets in the final round which also went 3-3.

"To be 8-4 instead of 7-5 is a different thing," Titans coach Tim DiLeo said. "Kathlyn was pivotal. That was our biggest match."

Last Thursday, Tesoro fell victim to a lopsided round when San Clemente used a 5-1 third round to pull out an 11-7 victory.

"We were expecting a close match," DiLeo said. "After the first round I was thinking the same exact thing as Thursday."

However, the Titans swept the doubles in Round2. First the No. 3 doubles team of Kristen Porter and Amanda Gleason turned in a 6-1 victory over the Cougars' No. 2 team. Then, Tesoro's No. 2 team of Tammy Taylor and Ariel Aung upset the Cougars' top team, 7-5.

Jones defeated Nakieta Hein, 6-4, to begin her day. The freshman lost two games the rest of the way. Hein won her next two sets.

"Nakieta played very well today," Cougars coach Terri Machado said.
