O.C. teacher/coach arrested on lewd-conduct allegations
Irvine police arrested a high school teacher Saturday, alleging that he lured boys into sending him sexually explicit photos through a fake Facebook profile.
Zachary Reeder, 30, of Orange, was arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct with a child, possession and distribution of child pornography, and child annoyance.
Police say he posed as a young, blonde, white female on Facebook and persuaded boys to send him personal photos. Reeder, though, did not appear to have any physical contact with the alleged victims, one of whom was 14 years old, police said.
A social-science teacher at Servite High School, Reeder may have chosen boys he met there, police said. He has taught at Servite since fall 2008. Before that, he taught history at Capistrano Valley Christian High in San Juan Capistrano, and has been a walk-on baseball coach at Beckman High for the past four seasons.
Servite released a statement Sunday saying Reeder had been fired.
"Please be assured, our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our students," the statement read.
At each school, Reeder coached or helped administer sports programs. He was the Servite director of basketball operations, according to biographical information on two school websites. He also coached boys varsity and junior varsity baseball at Beckman and boys junior varsity basketball at Capistrano Valley Christian.
He appears to have no criminal record. To be a walk-on assistant coach at Beckman, he had to pass a background check and fingerprinting, said Tustin Unified School District spokesman Mark Eliot. Servite teachers undergo state and federal fingerprinting, and "diocesan safe schools training," a school bulletin for Servite parents said. Orange County Superior Court records show no prior case files with Reeder as a defendant.
Beckman school officials notified all of the baseball parents, Eliot said, and are cooperating with police. Beckman administrators do not know if Reeder contacted any of the schools' players on Facebook.
Reeder was the boys junior varsity basketball coach at Capistrano Valley Christian in the 2007-08 season, said Chris Fore, a former athletic director for the school and now the athletic director at Excelsior Charter High School in Victorville. At Capistrano Valley, Reeder taught history, Fore said.
"I was very shocked and saddened to hear of this news," Fore added, "because it, to me, seems really out of character from my experience with him as his supervisor. Zachary did a great job coaching the JV for us."
The 2012 Beckman baseball media guide says that Reeder is married with a daughter and that he attended El Modena High and Cal State Fullerton.
Bail had not been set on Sunday for Reeder, who is being held at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange. He is due in court for a bail hearing Monday, according to police.
Irvine detectives say there may be more victims, and ask anyone with information to contact Detective Frough Jahid at 949-724-7184 or email@example.com.
