Los Alamitos senior wrestler Alex Redmond is ranked 20th in the state for the heavyweight division.

Los Alamitos' Redmond ready for Five Counties

Los Alamitos heavyweight Alex Redmond wasted little time ending his match Wednesday in a Sunset League dual against Fountain Valley.

Redmond, a senior, pinned his opponent in less than 20 seconds.

Redmond returns to Fountain Valley today for his first real test of the season in the Five Counties Invitational.

The double-elimination tournament begins at 10 a.m.

"He's had some football responsibilities to deal with, (and) he's been fighting some colds," Los Alamitos coach Kenny Torres said of Redmond's season thus far.

Torres added that "we've been working him real hard, and I think he's going to do real well (at Five Counties)."

Redmond, who has committed to UCLA for football, has been slowly working himself into wrestling shape. He missed the majority of the football season after suffering a dislocated elbow on Oct. 2.

He started the wrestling season the third-ranked heavyweight in the county. He went 7-0 at the Millikan Duals in early December and followed that with a first-place finish at the Irvine Invitational.

He missed the Mann Classic because he was playing in a football all-star game, and he didn't finish the Tournament of Champions because of an illness. Now he feels ready to show what he can do.

"I'm feeling good," he said. "I knew I was coming back to wrestling, I knew it was going to get me in better shape to go on to the next level ... It is my team ... I'm a captain."

Redmond is ranked 20th in the state. A big showing this weekend could send him trending upward.

"I have a nice game plan coming in," he said. "I'm going to wrestle hard, and whoever I wrestle against, I have to do my thing. I feel like I'm going to be able to beat anybody there.

"I've been working on tie-ups and different techniques and little things to help my game. I'm progressing well. I'm more in shape, I'm stronger ... I feel good."

Redmond finished third at last year's Five Counties. He placed first at the Sunset League finals and fourth at CIF.

The tournament resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals. The finals are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Last year, Northview of Covina won the team title. There were six finals that involved at least one county wrestler.
