Recruiting roundup: Mater Dei's Holmes ponders possible USC changes, plus other updates

    OCVarsity.com

Mater Dei offensive lineman Khaled Holmes has heard the latest reports of the NFL pursuing USC coach Pete Carroll.

So is the USC commit worried?

"It really doesn't concern me that much," Holmes said. "With all the success he has had, he's going to garner offers. ... It comes with the territory."

The Atlanta Falcons were the latest NFL team to express interest in Carroll. While Holmes said he believes the talks are in the early stages, he said he might contact coaches at USC to get a better read of the situation.

Holmes said if the discussions were to get serious, he would be more concerned.

"He's the best recruiter in college football history," said Holmes, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound senior. "Six straight BCS games."

Holmes said if he were in Carroll's position, he knows what he would do.

"If I were him, I wouldn't imagine leaving," Holmes said.

    ALL-STAR RECRUITER

Holmes was pleased with how he played in the inaugural Under Armour All-America High School Football Game on Jan. 5 in Florida.

Holmes started at right guard and played most the game. During his trip, Holmes said he talked up the Trojans with defensive tackle and teammate Omar Hunter of Buford High in Georgia. Holmes said Hunter (6-1, 300) is uncommitted.

"He definitely made me extend my game," Holmes said.

    PEMASA SETS VISIT

Orange Lutheran linebacker Ricky Pemasa (6-1, 210) said he is still committed to Fresno State, but he will make an official recruiting this weekend trip to Boise State.

"They (Boise State) are like Fresno. They're a good team," Pemasa said.

    GAINING INTEREST

Canyon wide receiver Christian Daniel (6-3, 190) was offered last week an official recruiting trip by Washington State, he confirmed. Daniel visited Penn over the weekend and also is interested in Columbia.

Mater Dei receiver Robbie Boyer (6-1, 175) and Pacifica receiver Tyler Ortiz (5-10, 185) have been contacted recently by UCLA. Boyer also made an unofficial visit to USC during the Trojans' Rose Bowl preparations.

    RECRUITING TRAILS

San Clemente linebacker Andrew Douglass (6-2, 228) made an official visit to Montana over the weekend and has committed to the university, Tritons defensive coordinator Jaime Ortiz said in an e-mail Sunday. ...

Mater Dei right guard Ben Tauanuu (6-5, 286) took an official recruiting trip to Montana State over the weekend. ...

Edison linebacker Earnie Sagiao (6-0, 235) will take his first official trip this weekend when he heads to New Mexico State. "I'm really excited to go," he said. ...

Fullerton offensive lineman Manuel Rojas (6-2, 283) will make an official trip to Portland State this weekend. ...

Trabuco Hills offensive linemen Jonathan Chanda (6-4, 274) and Michael Zupancic (6-5, 258) will visit Northern Arizona this weekend. Zupancic also is one of the top long snappers in the nation. ...

Valencia running back Wes Fletcher (6-0, 215) will take an official trip to Idaho State the weekend of Jan. 25.

    CURTIS AN ALL-STAR

San Clemente quarterback Brad Curtis (6-4, 210) has been added to Navy Coastal roster for the Southern California Bowl at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 26.

Curtis has been recruited by Montana State but also is considering junior college. Following the Tritons' 54-43 loss to Servite in the playoffs, he was contacted by Carroll.

    SHORT ROUTES

Los Alamitos linebacker Kameron Jones (6-2, 218) was offered a scholarship by Wyoming before the season but has narrowed his schools to Penn, Brown and Dartmouth.

El Dorado defensive tackle Anthony Laurenzi (6-3, 240) remains interested in Hawaii despite Coach June Jones departure for SMU.

Nebraska has joined the schools interested last in Cypress linebacker Ryan Saumur (6-2, 195).

Mater Dei receiver Ryan Mumma (5-10, 170) is planning to take an official recruiting trip to Army.
