Segerstrom charges back after sloppy start

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

SANTA ANA - After fumbling twice and trailing by a touchdown going into the second quarter, Segerstrom was not in the position it wanted to be in.

Once the second quarter began, though, things changed drastically as the Jaguars scored 21 points in the quarter, and 42 in a row overall, to rout Santa Ana Valley, 42-14, in their CIF-SS Southern Division playoff game at Segerstrom High.

The Jaguars (9-2) lost two fumbles in the first quarter, one on the Falcons’ 19. The Falcons (7-4) were able to score late in the first quarter on a 10-yard run by Alex Hernandez and had some momentum entering the second quarter.

That momentum was killed quickly as running back David Perkins and Sonny Roa trampled the Falcons for the rest of the night. Roa scored 16 seconds into the second quarter on a 12-yard run, and the Jaguars defense started to stop the Falcons. Ben Lopez scored from 17 yards on a run up the middle, and a little less than halfway through the quarter, the Jaguars took the lead.

The Jaguars' passing offense got into the game late in the first half as quarterback Raymond Avalos threw a perfect ball that split two defenders and found Omar Navarro for a 30-yard touchdown and, more important, a 21-7 halftime lead.

Perkins opened the second half with a touchdown from 16 yards and didn’t stop running all evening as he ended up with 213 yards on 21 carries. Roa had 10 carries for 62 yards.

Segerstrom coach Mike Maceranka knew this would be a challenging game as both schools are located in Santa Ana and rivals.

“They made a big deal all week about playing Valley, but this was really just about us focusing on the task that was at hand,” he said.

The Jaguars move on the road to face Garden Grove in the second round of the CIF playoffs next week.
