Foothill finds its footing in second half to beat Huntington Beach
Game played at Newport Harbor High.
Foothill's 27-3 triumph against Huntington Beach at Newport Harbor High was the Sea View League opener for both teams.
Griffith sat out the remainder of the first quarter and struggled to find a rhythm in the second quarter before connecting with Brandon Dupre for a 60-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter.
Griffith followed with touchdown passes to Nick Falbo (7 yards) and Ryne Krueger (2 yards) en route a 257-yard performance on 15-for-25 passing.
“We were cautious to make sure Zach didn’t sustain a greater injury so we waited and struggled a bit without him but our defense kept us in there like always,” Foothill coach Doug Case said, “and, when Zach got back in there, we just got things going.”
Foothill (5-1, 1-0) needed just 11 plays to score three touchdowns in the third quarter to turn a 0-3 halftime deficit into a 20-3 lead. Griffith threw his final touchdown pass with 16 seconds left in the third quarter to go up, 27-3.
Patrick McLaughlin had two sacks and Foothill’s defense forced two interceptions and held the Oilers to just 7 yards rushing, despite playing without a third of its strong linebacker crew in Richard Song (leg).
Ben Douglas led the Knights with 79 yards rushing, including a 68-yard touchdown run.
Sean Guite had 161 yards passing for Huntington Beach (2-4, 0-1).
