Sunny Hills starts strong, holds off Troy

Colby rushes for two touchdowns in win.
FULLERTON - Running back Elliott Colby ran for two touchdowns to help Sunny Hills to a 22-12 Freeway League-opening victory over Troy at Fullerton High Friday night.

Colby got the scoring started with a 2-yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the first quarter. With 3:18 left, a safety by Sunny Hills made the score 9-0.

Sunny Hills scored again with no time left in the first quarter, when Lancers’ quarterback Johnny Nguyen connected with Jae Byun on a 31-yard pass play, giving Sunny Hills a 16-0 lead.

Troy’s first score in the game was a 24-yard pass play from quarterback Kyle Smith to wide receiver Manuel Carillo with 9:24 left in the second quarter.

Troy scored again in the third quarter, when running back Chaz Wendt rumbled in 11 yards for a touchdown.

A 7-yard touchdown run by Colby with 9:08 left in the fourth quarter was enough to put the game away for Sunny Hills.
