Find the overall league and individual team previews for all five South Coast League teams.
COACHES’ POLL:
1. Mission Viejo, 12-1 in 2009 (25 poll points)
2. San Clemente, 6-5 (19)
3. Dana Hills, 9-3 (15)
4. Tesoro, 5-5 (9)
5. Trabuco Hills, 12-2 (7)
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Mission Viejo. The Diablos lost 16 starters to graduation, but Mission Viejo doesn’t rebuild. It reloads. Diablos coach Bob Johnson said he really likes his juniors and seniors. Alex Bridgford takes over at quarterback, Dallas Kessman will be a strong running back and the Diablos have a huge line. Linebacker Tre Madden leads what could end up being one of the top defenses in the county.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
Tesoro. The Titans might be a year away, but the young Titans should be very competitive. Sophomore Matt Adam is one of the top quarterback prospects in the county.
PLAYER TO WATCH:
Tre Madden. The 6-1, 220-pound Mission Viejo linebacker seems to be in on every play the way he covers the field. He also gives the Diablos a change of pace on offense as the quarterback in the wildcat formation.
Chris Kearney. The multi-talented Dana Hills star is a threat to score whenever he touches the ball at wide receiver or on punt and kick returns. He also plays defensive back.
OTHER TOP PLAYERS:
Dana Hills: K Brenden Beckley; QB Trent Mason; and DL Cody Meddaugh
Mission Viejo: QB Alex Bridgford; DB Ethan DeSilva; DL Riley Detrick; RB Dallas Kessman; and OL Jon King
San Clemente: LB Chad Foster; OL Kyle Murphy; DL Sean O’Grady; and QB Travis Wilson
Tesoro: QB Matt Adam; LB Nolan Muchow; TB Nate Tago; and WR Kyle Woolbright
Trabuco Hills: LB Nick Cody; K Oleg Parent; and DB Andrew Walsh
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Mission Viejo at San Clemente, Oct. 29. The South Coast League championship could come down to the winner of this game, but the Diablos will be big favorites. Mission Viejo leads the all-time series 31-12-1.
TOUGHEST SCHEDULE:
Mission Viejo. The Diablos have nonleague games against Bothell (Wash.), Loyola of L.A., Corona, Long Beach Poly, Carson and Redlands East Valley. That’s easily one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the county.
