CdM turns up pressure, stops Rancho Alamitos

OCVARSITY.COM

NEWPORT BEACH – If Corona del Mar keeps up its defensive intensity, it might need to think about changing its name from the Sea Kings to the Sea Thieves.

Corona del Mar (19-9) utilized its full-court press, which led to 17 steals, to defeat Rancho Alamitos, 84-41, in a CIF-SS Division 3AA first-round contest.

Max Stone scored 20 points, but still didn’t seem satisfied after his team’s dominant defensive effort.

“I don’t think they should have scored 41 points,” Stone said. “Next team we play, we have to play better defense than that.”

The defense might not have been good enough for Stone, but it was good enough to turn a 7-5 advantage into a 26-point lead late in the second quarter.

Bo St. Geme was the main culprit when it came to picking the pockets of Vaquero ball handlers. St. Geme recorded five steals, while pouring in eight points. Blake Grable played his part in the heist with three steals of his own.

“We knew if we pressured them we could create some turnovers,” Sea Kings head coach Ryan Schachter said. “The focus was to pressure without fouling, but we knew our pressure could probably get to them.”

Rancho Alamitos (6-17) was led in scoring by Dylan Mullaney and his 12 points. Gary Lemus provided some spark for the Vaqueros with some hustle on the glass and on defense.

Now the first round is in the rearview mirror, Schachter and his team have a new focus.

“We just want to compete,” Schachter said about moving on to the second round. “We just want to win one. Right now we’re at 0-0 and just trying to win one.”

Corona del Mar will face Hoover of Glendale at 7 p.m. on Friday. The game will be at Hoover High.
