Mater Dei girls cruise past Orange Lutheran
SANTA ANA – The Mater Dei girls basketball team entered Tuesday's game against Orange Lutheran having won its past 38 games in Trinity League play.
The No. 1 Monarchs moved that number to 39 by cruising to a 78-23 victory over the No. 5 Lancers at Mater Dei.
"In the big picture, the streaks don't mean much because as we get in the playoffs our division is so hard," Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan said. "You know, it's nice because it shows how hard we've worked.
"But it's great for this team because this is a whole new team. We have no starters coming back from last year. So for these guys to continue what they've done is amazing."
Katie Lou Samuelson scored a game-high 19 points, and Karlie Samuelson and Jayde Woods each added 10 points.
Jessica Salottolo led Orange Lutheran (21-4, 4-3) with seven points, and Abbey Goodsell and Sydney Jacobs scored six and four points.
Andee Velasco (8 points, three steals) knocked down two 3-pointers for the Monarchs (24-0, 7-0), who made 12 shots from behind the 3-point arc.
Mater Dei jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to sharp shooting and a collective effort on defense that forced turnovers. Velasco, Cheyenne Allen (three points, one steal) and Alli Brown (three points) helped set the tone for the Monarchs defensively.
