Woodbridge wins in rout, stays unbeaten in league
The Woodbridge girls basketball team won, 50-32, over Northwood on Tuesday night at Northwood High, picking up its 21st victory and remaining undefeated during Pacific Coast League.
You wouldn't have known any of that, however, from listening to Woodbridge coach Pete Belanto after the game.
"We did absolutely nothing well the whole night except maybe defend for maybe five minutes in the second quarter," Belanto said. "Other than that, I thought it was a terrible performance on our part."
Sarah Lipton and Wendy Shiga each scored 15 points for the Warriors (21-3, 7-0), and Kelli Robinson added 13 points and connected on three 3-pointers.
Northwood's Danielle Munson led all scorers with 17 points, and Kaitlyn Hsu added 11 points and Kaitlin Hara had four.
The Timberwolves (15-8, 1-6) scored the game's first basket, but the Warriors awoke from a slow start and built an eight-point lead by halftime.
"We started doing what we did in the beginning of the season, read-and-react offense instead of calling out set plays," Lipton said about the second-quarter run that helped the Warriors build a 16-point lead.
"The person that stepped it up the most for us was our point guard Emma Shimizu," she added. "She pushed the ball, and when we push the ball is when we're at our best."
Shimizu finished with four points but contributed several passes that led to baskets for her teammates.
The Warriors' biggest lead was 25 points in the fourth quarter.
