Slow start dooms Troy girls in loss
Troy fell behind early and found itself fighting an uphill battle the rest of the way against Santiago of Corona in a nonleague girls basketball game Saturday night at Troy High.
That's not a recipe for victory against a quality team like the Sharks, who held on for a 65-57 victory.
"We came and played a very good team and spotted them (seven) points in the first minute, less than a minute," Troy coach Roger Anderson said. "You can't do that with a good team. It came down to us fouling them and it was less than a seven-point game. That's the seven points we spotted them in the very first minute of the game. We need to be smarter than that."
The Sharks (15-2), ranked No. 5 in Division 1AA and No. 12 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, started with an 11-2 run, including the seven-point barrage.
Chrishae Rowe and Monique Billings, a 6-3 junior, did the bulk of the damage for Santiago. Rowe scored 28 points, including four 3-pointers, and Billings scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Gabriella Hanson kept the Warriors (13-3), ranked No. 2 in Division 1AA and No. 11 in the state, in the game, finishing with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Alecia Dimas had 14 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Barbara Sitanggan scored 11 points for Troy.
In other nonleague games:
No. 5 JSerra 59, St.Bernard of Playa del Rey 51: Coco Miller scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, August Touchard had 17 points and six assists and Courtney Vaccher had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Lions (14-4) past the Vikings (14-5). JSerra and St. Bernard are ranked No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in Division 4AA.
Edison 65, Santa Margarita 34: Geena Gomez knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points and Marlies DeJong and Justine Modde scored 12 points apiece to lift the Chargers (11-5) over the visiting Eagles (5-12).
In the Sea View League:
Dana Hills 40, Trabuco Hills 34: Maddy Bloom scored 16 points and Serena Saba had 12 points for the visiting Dolphins (10-8, 2-0) in their victory over the Mustangs (7-12, 1-2).
El Toro 67, Aliso Niguel 60: Whitney Williams scored 20 points and Shea Simon had 15 points for the visiting Chargers (9-11, 1-1) in a victory over the Wolverines (9-10, 0-3).
San Juan Hills 39, Mission Viejo 35: Abby Conklin had 14 points and seven rebounds and Evelyn Fox scored 14 points as the Stallions (10-7, 1-2) defeated the visiting Diablos (6-12, 1-1).
