Slow start dooms Troy girls in loss
Troy fell behind early and found itself fighting an uphill battle the rest of the way against Santiago of Corona in a nonleague girls basketball game Saturday night at Troy High.
That's not a recipe for victory against a quality team like the Sharks, who held on for a 65-57 victory.
"We came and played a very good team and spotted them (seven) points in the first minute, less than a minute," Troy coach Roger Anderson said. "You can't do that with a good team. It came down to us fouling them and it was less than a seven-point game. That's the seven points we spotted them in the very first minute of the game. We need to be smarter than that."
The Sharks (15-2), ranked No. 5 in Division 1AA and No. 12 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, started with an 11-2 run, including the seven-point barrage.
Chrishae Rowe and Monique Billings, a 6-3 junior, did the bulk of the damage for Santiago. Rowe scored 28 points, including four 3-pointers, and Billings scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Gabriella Hanson kept the Warriors (13-3), ranked No. 2 in Division 1AA and No. 11 in the state, in the game, finishing with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Alecia Dimas had 14 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Barbara Sitanggan scored 11 points for Troy.
