JSerra attack overwhelms Rosary

OCVARSITY.COM

When JSerra's girls basketball team gets its inside game going and is making 3-pointers, it can be difficult to contain.

Rosary did its best to stay within striking distance for much of the first half, but the Royals were eventually overwhelmed by the No. 5 Lions, 69-44, in a Trinity League game Thursday night at Rosary.

The Royals led, 16-14, after the first quarter, but JSerra went on a 19-3 run to start the second quarter to seize control. Rosary's Samantha Hernandez, who scored a game-high 22 points, hit six 3-pointers in the first half to keep the game from getting out of control before halftime.

"It was tight," JSerra coach Mary Rossignol said of the first half. "They are a good team and they scrap. We knew they were going to come out scrapping and pressing and doubling, so we just worked through it.

"We knew it was going to be loud and a lot of adversity. Their crowd is awesome."

Rosary doesn't have a starter over 5-foot-9, while JSerra starts 6-4 Megan House and 6-2 Courtney Vaccher. The Lions used their significant size advantage to outrebound Rosary, 44-13. Vaccher nearly out-rebounded the Royals by herself, finishing with 12 rebounds. She also scored 14 points, while House had 11 points and eight rebounds.

"We knew we had opportunities with the inside-outside game," Rossignol said. "We switched some things, made some adjustments when we saw what they did. I think that worked to our advantage.

"Courtney did a great job. We talked about her being active on both ends of the floor and she was awesome."

JSerra dropped 10 3-pointers on Rosary. Coco Miller knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. August Touchard scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Natalie Wek made three 3-pointers.

In the South Coast League:

No. 7 Laguna Hills 61, El Toro 37: Maddy Ziering-Smith had 18 points and six assists, Anna Mumm had 11 points and 15 rebounds and Cheyenne Berbey scored 14 points to lift the Hawks (15-4, 2-0) over the visiting Chargers (8-11, 0-1).

In the Orange Coast League:

Estancia 60, Laguna Beach 55: Bryanna Vernon scored 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Celia Duran had 18 points to help the Eagles (11-6, 2-0) defeat the visiting Breakers (13-2, 1-1), who got 30 points from Jackie Cenan.
