San Clemente rolls on in Larry Doyle Championships

OCVARSITY.COM

San Clemente girls basketball coach Lacey Burns said her team has been on "Cloud 9" since it won its bracket at the prestigous Nike Tournament of Champions last week in Chandler, Ariz.

The No. 7 Tritons carried that momentum into their 71-46 victory over Villa Park in the opening round of the Larry Doyle O.C. Championships on Wednesday at Edison High.

"I mean, that was a great team-bonding experience most of all and just to play three competitive teams — we just got better over those three games," Burns said of the trip to Arizona.

San Clemente led by 14 points early in the third quarter, but the Spartans were able to close the gap to 48-41 after a 3-point play by Christina Scavuzzo with 2 minutes left in the third.

That was the last time the Spartans were within striking distance of San Clemente as Frankie Pinto, Kathleen Hartmann, Gabby McGann and Jessica Degree helped the Tritons pull away with a 23-5 run to close the game.

Pinto had 15 points and three assists, Hartmann had 15 points, Gabby McGann had 12 points and Degree had nine points and seven rebounds.

Maddy Stayberg had 13 and Scavuzzo 12 for the Spartans (6-4).

The Tritons are off to a 9-2 start and they've done it without Brogan Griffin, the team's leading scorer from last season who hasn't played so far this season because of a torn ACL.

"She was our best offensive player last year and we definitely have missed her with her knack for scoring and offensive mindset," Burns said. "She should return in the next few weeks, hopefully, for league. That would be the goal. We've missed her tremendously. I hope she will be able to get back in the next few weeks and strengthen our team even more."

In the Garden Grove Tournament:

Segerstrom 63, Sunny Hills 43: The Jaguars were looking to get back to their winning ways after dropping two tough games recently, including a Dec. 15 loss to No. 6 Woodbridge. Segerstrom played a trapping defense for most of the game and gradually extended its lead each quarter in the opening-round game.

Segerstrom (10-2) jumped to an early 19-13 lead after one quarter, thanks in part to an aggressive full-court trap that sparked an 11-0 run and forced Sunny Hills into eight turnovers.

The Jaguars extended their lead in the second and took a 29-20 lead in to halftime before putting the finishing touch on Sunny Hills (5-8, 0-1) in the second half.

Sergerstrom's Kayla Stephens, the No. 12 leading scorer in the county, had a game-high 21 points, including making 7 of 8 free throws. The 6-foot junior also showed her range as she drained two 3-pointers.

Sunny Hills guard Madison Cruse entered as the No. 2 scorer in the county and didn't disappoint in the losing effort, dropping in a team-high 19 points, which is just under her season average of 20.8.

Segerstrom plays No. 10 Foothill on Thursday at 3 p.m.
