Orange Lutheran goes long to beat Huntington Beach
Fountain Valley – The Orange Lutheran girls basketball team executed the 3-point shot to near perfection and received the early season validation it sought by blowing past Huntington Beach in the championship game of the Fountain Valley Hoops Challenge, 66-33, on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers (6-0) were led by senior guard Jessica Salottolo, who scored 16 points, but also got a boost from fellow senior Abbey Goodsell, whose four 3-pointers helped Orange Lutheran race out to an early lead that it never relinquished.
Goodsell was named the MVP of the tournament, averaging just over 10 points a game.
The fast start gave the Lancers a completely different outcome compared with Friday night's hard-fought semifinal victory over tournament hosts Fountain Valley. Orange Lutheran won that game, 54-44.
Senior forward Sydney Jacobs (14 points, five rebounds) opened the game by scoring the first five points of the contest, and then Goodsell hit her first shot from beyond the arc, forcing a quick Oilers timeout after one minute of play.
Goodsell scored all 12 of her points in the first period as she went on to make three more 3-pointers.
Fluid ball movement, excellent floor spacing, and suffocating defense allowed the Lancers to continue their offensive onslaught as they converted six of their nine 3-pointers in the opening quarter en route to a 30-point first quarter.
Huntington Beach (3-1) managed only 12 points in the first half as it faced relentless pressure on virtually every possession.
Forward Jami Hahn added 10 points as four starters scored in double figures for Orange Lutheran. A total of nine Lancers were able to get their names in the scoring column, reinforcing the collective effort in victory.
Huntington Beach point guard Reanne Wang finished with 11 points and was the only Oiler to score in double figures.
