Villa Park finds winning combination
Villa Park’s combination of interior size and 42 percent shooting was too much for La Habra to handle on Thursday night. The Spartans raced out to an early lead and never relinquished it, holding off the Highlanders for a 63-52 victory in the Coyote Classic at Buena Park High.
Villa Park's 6-foot-10 center Lamont Tyler was a tough task for La Habra to guard in the post. Tyler led all scorers with 21 points and his inside presence helped open up outside shots for teammates.
“We have to be an inside-out team,” Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said. “We can play through [Tyler] and we need to play through him. … When we play through him, all of a sudden the three’s open, the lane’s open for the drive; he really does make the game easier for everyone.”
Villa Park’s Luke Selway had 15 points, shooting five of nine from the field while Jason Askins connected on two of his four 3-point attempts and added 11 points.
David Desatoff’s 13 points along with 11 from Zach Gray paced the Highlander offense. As a team, La Habra knocked down six 3-pointers.
Villa Park (5-3) trailed only once, at 3-2 in the opening minutes, before going on a 20-7 run to finish the first quarter ahead by 12. The Highlanders battled to close the deficit to 30-22 at halftime.
Despite drawing within six a couple times in the third quarter La Habra (1-3) could not sustain a comeback effort down the stretch and never got closer than nine in the final period.
Pool play concludes on Friday and the championship game is Saturday night.
