Orange Lutheran can't keep up with Oaks Christian
Orange Lutheran turned in a valiant effort to stay close to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, ranked No. 16 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, but the Lions had too much firepower and eventually pulled away for a 53-45 victory on Friday night in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High.
Orange Lutheran (14-10), ranked No. 10 in the county and No. 9 in Division 1AA, was coming off a 65-39 loss to Mater Dei on Tuesday heading into the game against Oaks Christian (20-4).

"Coming off Mater Dei we were looking forward to the competition and playing (Oaks Christian) a lot," said Jesse Spittel, who had six points and eight rebounds against the Lions. "We just didn't bring it. We had a ton of turnovers. We just couldn't click tonight."
Abbey Goodsell hit two 3-pointers and Jami Hahn made a floater in the lane for the Lancers to cut Oaks Christian's lead to 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lancers went ice cold from the field in the second quarter, but the Lions were unable to shake Orange Lutheran and only had a 24-17 lead at halftime.
Oaks Christian led by as much as 15 in the second half and held on for the victory.
Meghan McIntyre scored 18 points, Beth Mounier had 17 points and Brianna Barrett chipped in with 10 points to lead the Lions. Goodsell was the only Orange Lutheran player in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
"We're going great and then we have trouble finishing," said Lancers forward Jesse Spittel, who had six points and eight rebounds against the Lions. "We just have to push through that last quarter. We get tired and it shows and they keep running us and push our weaknesses."
Barrett and the rest of her teammates planned to stick around and watch Windward of L.A. and Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state, respectively, in the 9 p.m. game on Friday night.
Windward and Oaks Christian are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in Division 4AA and Barrett has signed with USC, which is the same school that Mater Dei point guard Jordan Adams signed with.
"I love playing in big stadiums," Barrett said. "It's kind of hard to hear your coaches, so you gotta stay focused. I'm gonna be here (at the Nike Extravaganza) the whole time. I played with Jordan before for travel ball and I know everyone, basically, from Windward."
Windward beat Oaks Christian twice last season, including a 72-37 in the second round of the CIF Southern California Division 4 regionals.
"We've played them (the Wildcats) three times in the past year or so," Mounier said. "We need to execute when we play them. They are a great team, a very tall team. We need to play defense and execute when we play them."
In another Nike Extravaganza game:

Rialto used a 17-3 run to start the game and closed with a 20-8 run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
